Defence build-up in the form of digital sovereignty
· Atlas
Viðskiptablaðið covered the internet partnership between Atlas and Nova, and where Iceland stands on digital sovereignty, under the headline "Defence build-up in the form of digital sovereignty" (in Icelandic).
Digital sovereignty is about a nation having full control of its infrastructure, its data and its digital services, and holding the last word on its own digital fate. Iceland does not stand well there: most of the country's infrastructure rests on the same four large providers, and 80% of Icelandic institutions host important services abroad.
The article also asks how the money set aside for defence should be spent. Rather than arming, the country can strengthen its digital infrastructure and become sovereign over its own data. That is the defence build-up Atlas is working on.
